As Meat Loves Salt

I just finished reading As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann. My god, it was good. Has anyone else read it? Well, for those who haven't, skip the next paragraph, for there are spoilers.

Wow, the end was left open, wasn't it? Jacob does not know for sure that Ferris is dead, so... sequel? I liked them together. I found so much of myself in Jacob. 'Cept the physical violence part :P. One scene in particular struck me intensely: on page 501, after trying in vain to win back Ferris' affection, Jacob thinks, 'I was not made to be loved,' and, 'I was afflicted with an ugliness of the soul that no physick could correct.' It pained me, made me feel sickeningly unlikable. I somehow admire Jacob.

In yoga class, we are discussing the Ahamkara, the 'I Maker.' Imagine how many times in the day you say "I..." Many, many times! The 'I Maker' is the ego, of course. We were talking about how sometimes your Ahamkara thinks it is some things, but it really is not. Or sometimes it thinks it knows things but it really does not. For example, my yoga teacher Mary said to our class, "I heard George Bush on the radio the other day saying, 'The Iraqi people believe...' and I immediately thought, 'Well, how would you know? Did you talk to them?'" And so forth. Assumption and self-centeredness must be done away with.

We are also talking about observing one's thoughts, but not letting them overcome oneself. In English class on Tuesday, I just had a sudden realization, and it felt nice. I was not offended by this realization nor denying it as I thought I might. Yoga is, again, very good. Forgive me, but I cannot go into detail here.

On Ian and dad's computer, a cable modem was just installed, so things can be downloaded very quickly. Yay! So I have taken to downloading music videos. Specifically Tara/Willow ones. You know, I have never seen the show, nor will I probably ever, but they are cute together.

I may be promoted to managing editor of my school's newspaper soon. I know I work more than everyone else anyway (bad, bad Ahamkara!). Ahem. I work with slightly more fervor than the others, erm... yeah. You cannot get rid of the Ahamkara. It's impossible.

Speaking of yoga, I just purchased an eye bag, and it is so, so nice. I use it for laying down meditation, and also to sleep at night. It is peppermint and lavender scented. It's amazing.

I have the next four days off of school because of parent/teacher conferences. Praise god.

I have recently realized that Madonna has a song that is, I think, anyway, a pretty popular yoga-ish prayer. I was listening to one of her CDs, and I heard the lyrics, "Om shanti." 'Om' means 'Lord' and 'shanti' is 'peace.' I think a prayer with the same 'refrain,' if you will, was in the September newsletter for my yoga center.

I could just live in my yoga center, that's how very cool it is.
